The Indian Government seems ready to implement the ambitious renewable energy capacity addition targets it announced a year ago.

Power companies, with the exception of some non-fossil energy companies, should produce at least 9 percent of total electricity from non-hydroelectric renewable energy by 2020.

PSC Chairman Brandon Presley said this is a major step forward for renewable energy in Mississippi.

Binns said uncertainty over the long-term future of heavy South Island energy user the Tiwai smelter made it uneconomic for anyone to consider building a peaker power station. "We are proud to team up with the Navy, along with the Commission and its staff, on this very important project".

Mighty River Power [NZX: MRP] chief executive Fraser Whineray says solar will continue to grow in an unsubsidised market, with people putting it on for a variety of reasons. "It enables us to better serve and complete our mission".

The installations are generating more than 40 megawatts of electrical energy.

It accounted for less than 1 percent of total electricity in 2015, but the commerce department says the state's solar power generation is expected to increase by 15 times this year alone, as more solar panel projects get the go ahead. Combined at 105 MW, these projects will make Mississippi Power the largest partner in renewable energy in the state.

The developers of the three projects will finance each installation, with Mississippi Power receiving all of the energy and associated renewable energy credits.

The news follows ACWA's recent signing of the power purchase agreement (PPA) for the repowering of the 485MW Hussain CCGT Integrated Power Plant (IPP).

The industry has reacted furiously to the move to do away with support for new solar thermal schemes from next year under the renewable heat incentive (RHI), which aims to boost the use of clean technology to provide heating and hot water. Construction on all three projects is slated to begin later this year.
