The device can also be used to send messages, get updates on news, sports and weather and control smart home devices connected using Apple's HomeKit. This is the product that will measure Apple's progress and whether its stance on privacy hinders its machine learning endeavours.

Along with upgraded versions of iPad and Mac laptops, Apple unveiled an iMac Pro work station that had the computing built in behind the screen and was touted as the most powerful computer the company has ever made.

Apple is facing stiff competition in maintaining market share and is trying to find a means to continue to grow its consumer revenue.

"Just some loud audio and video that autoplays and disrupts you're whole reading vibe". It will allow users to automatically block auto-play videos by detecting videos that shouldn't be playing when you open a webpage to read an article, for example. The mail and photo apps are also getting updates.

This year's conference follows the end of the iPhone's 13 consecutive years of growing sales.

A new desktop and laptop operating system was also announced.

With HomePod, Apple is preparing itself to take on Amazon's (AMZN - Free Report) Echo and Alphabet's (GOOGL - Free Report) Google Home, which is a little speaker-like home automation device that can do everything from streaming music to dimming lights or adjusting the heat on the compatible thermostat. It will work closely with your Apple Music subscription, and will have access to your playlists and a vast 40 million music library, to pull in more recommendations based on listening preferences.

This means you cannot only ask Siri to play music, but also ask her questions about it like "who's the drummer in this?", "when was this recorded?" and "what was the top song in 1983?"

More than 35 million people in the USA are expected to use a voice-activated speaker at least once a month this year, more than doubling from last year, according the research firm eMarketer.

"Apple reinvented portable music with iPod, and now HomePod will reinvent how we enjoy music wirelessly throughout our homes", Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice-president of worldwide marketing, said in a statement.

The HomePod will be available in December in the US, United Kingdom and Australia in white and space gray.

The new iPad Pro also comes with a better camera - the same one found in the iPhone 7 - along with more storage, a better display and faster refreshing of moving images.

The company also rolled out tools for developers to create augmented reality applications for iPhones and iPads.

A new Siri interface on the Apple Watch will also blend users' calendar information with other useful details, like airline tickets they may have booked, the company said.

As to the WWDC announcements themselves, they were admittedly incremental in some regards, but that's how Apple actually operates more often than not.
