The gunman who wounded five people at the congressional baseball practice on Wednesday only opened fire after learning that the men on the field were Republicans.

So far, investigators have not linked Hodgkinson to any radical groups, said a law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly.

Scalise received numerous blood transfusions as surgeons worked to fix his torn blood vessels and other wounds, Sava said, adding: "We are encouraged by improvement in his condition over the last 36 hours".

Authorities believe the 66-year-old had been living out of a van in northern Virginia since March after leaving his southern IL home.

Suzanne Hodgkinson was visibly shaken during the interview as she was escorted by St. Clair Deputy Chief Rick Wagner. She said she feels "horrible" about what happened.

"I have just been informed that the alleged shooter at the Republican baseball practice this morning is someone who apparently volunteered on my presidential campaign", Sanders said.

Thankfully, nobody was killed in the tragedy (with the exception of Hodgkinson), though House Majority Whip Steve Scalise remains in the hospital. "I have never said 'life sucks, ' only the policies of the Republicans", he wrote in another.

In 2006, he charged into a neighbor's home where the foster daughter was hanging out with a friend, then-19-year-old Aimee Moreland, and smacked the pal in the face "with a closed fist", according to the Daily Beast.

"I don't have a message, I don't know anything about this, I can't help you all".

"We understand he is lucky to be alive", the family said, crediting Mika's survival to his "fighting spirit" and the heroism of Capitol Police agents who took down the shooter.

Hodgkinson, who works in the tax business herself, didn't seem to know how to elaborate on his apparent mission. A trace of the firearms determined they were legally purchased by Hodgkinson.

The former inspector's social media accounts showed passionate support for Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) and anger toward President Donald Trump and the Republican party in general. He was living in his van and had a police record that included drunk driving, assault, and battery.
