Uber Is Finally Giving You The Option To Tip Drivers

The decision puts Uber on an even footing with Lyft, its biggest competitor, which allows passenger to tip a driver through the app up to 72 hours after the ride was completed.

One advocate for tipping at Uber was Jeff Jones, who was hired a year ago to be Kalanick's number two and help turn around its image with drivers. It will roll out on Tuesday in Seattle, Minneapolis and Houston and expected to expand to all US cities by the end of July. It will be available to all US drivers by the end of July.

San Francisco-based Uber Technologies Inc had for years opposed adding a tipping feature to its app despite drivers' arguments the extra money would help compensate for decreasing wages. Because it's the right thing to do, it's long overdue, and there's no time like the present,"se it's the right thing to do, it's long overdue, and there's no time like the present", said Schildkrout.

This is a remarkable turnaround for Uber, which has been struggling in the face of multiple scandals that recently culminated in a temporary leave of absence by the company's CEO Travis Kalanick.

Among other changes, riders will be charged a cancellation fee for cancelling rides after more than two minutes.

"Uber service fees are never deducted from your tips", clarifies the company's announcement to drivers.

Here's how it'll work: After a trip is completed, passengers will be able to choose from preset tip amounts of $1, $2, $5 or enter a custom amount. More importantly, Uber also agreed to a number of concessions, including new specific policies created to give drivers greater transparency about what keeps them in good standing and what could boot them off the platform. It described Uber's adoption of tipping as "fantastic news for drivers" in an emailed statement. The inability for riders to give tips has been a common gripe from Uber drivers and has been played on by Lyft as a key point in its self-portrayal as the "nicer" alternative to Uber for ride-sharing.

This isn't the only change coming for drivers - although Uber acknowledges it's the one that's been most requested.

In a major policy reversal Uber says the new plan is part of "180 Days of Change".

Hey there, loyal Uber driver! "Whether consciously or unconsciously, we tend to tip certain types of people better than others", Uber says.

UberEATS customers will also now have the option to add a tip.

"When we started Uber six years ago, we thought long and hard about whether to build a tipping option into the app".
