Twenty-five years after establishing diplomatic relations with Israel, India is openly embracing its growing ties with Tel Aviv as Narendra Modi becomes the first Indian prime minister to travel there on Tuesday. This year both the countries is commemorating 25 years of diplomatic relations. "As the first Indian prime minister to do so, I am greatly looking forward to this unprecedented visit that will bring our two countries and people closer", he said in a statement in New Delhi.

Israel Ambassador to India, Danny Carmon said that Narendra Modi and Benjamin Netanyahu will hold a four-hour meeting on Wednesday, which will include a "working lunch". The Israeli leader has shown such a special gesture only for the Presidents of the United States of America, including the recent visit by Donald Trump, and the Pope.

In an interview to the pro-government daily "Israel Hayom", Modi said his visit was "based on the deep centuries-old connection between our two peoples".

AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi also criticised the government on the eve Modi's visit to Israel, saying it would "strengthen the occupation of West Bank and Gaza". He is the first Indian Prime Minister to visit the state.

"Prime Minister Modi addresses core issues like overcoming exam stress, keeping one's composure during exams and even what to do after the exams are over", it said.

Defence, agriculture and water management are among the various areas of cooperation that are expected to "revolutionise" the bilateral relationship.

Modi's visit will only formally de-hyphenate India's ties with Israel and Palestine.

Israel has quietly supported India's military needs for decades - it gave India arms in 1971 during a war with Pakistan and later in 1999 during another conflict with Pakistan.

Economic, cultural and people-to-people ties are also scheduled to be discussed and a number of agreements are expected to be signed between India and Israel. The two leaders are also likely to discuss security cooperation and counter-terrorism. Under the India-Israel action plan, Israel set up 15 centres of excellence in agriculture and horticulture in Bihar, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu.

Regarding Jews of Indian origin living in Israel, Sofer said there are now second generation Indian Jews in Israel. The theme of the summit for 2017 is "Shaping an Inter- Connected World".

"Given the Sea Guardian's capabilities, such a response to the Indian Navy's request demonstrates a major change in USA policy as this type of aircraft capability is only exported to a very select few of America's closest defence partners", he said.
