Everton, who have spent freely in the close season, are believed to have hoped to sell Lukaku for closer to £100 million, which would have made him the world's most expensive player - eclipsing the £89 million that United spent on Pogba a year ago.

He was meant to be back for pre-season training on Thursday but opted to stay with Pogba as his move to United seems to be in it's final phase.

The Portuguese boss was said to be concerned Real Madrid were using their interest in order to extend the 24-year-old's contract at the Bernabeu, leaving United embarassed. Chelsea had been hopeful of signing Lukaku but the Blues will now be forced to turn their attentions to alternative targets.

The Belgian had also been linked with Chelsea but it appears United will now be getting Lukaku, who scored 25 goals in the Premier League last season. It is believed that his move to Everton will be a free transfer, despite two years remaining on his current deal.

Lukaku made 39 appearances for Everton last season, scoring 26 goals and assisting seven further strikes in all competitions. It was Mourinho who sanctioned Lukaku's sale to Everton in 2014.

"The club have seen the likes of Asmir Begovic, Nathan Ake, Tammy Abraham and John Terry depart either on permanent or long-term loan deals, and have only confirmed the arrival of Willy Caballero on a free transfer from Manchester City".

Lukaku is represented by Mino Raiola - who also boasts the likes of Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan as his clients.

Lukaku wants to quit Everton so he can challenge for the Premier League and Champions League.

The Times report that Everton are set to receive a flat fee of £75 million for Lukaku, with £15 million of add-ons and Wayne Rooney.

The Belgium worldwide has been pursued quietly for months and is said to have been the club's main target, with Chelsea's interest helping to cover that up.
