Naidu's win is all but certain due to the NDA's numerical superiority over opposition parties, which have fielded Gopalkrishna Gandhi as their nominee.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced Venkaiah Naidu, a veteran BJP leader from Andhra Pradesh, as NDA's vice-presidential candidate.

The United Progressive Alliance's (UPA) candidate Gopalkrishna Gandhi, former West Bengal Governor and Mahatma Gandhi's grandson, filed his nomination papers earlier in the day.

Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Y.S. Chowdary said that Telugu people are proud over the choice of Venkaiah Naidu.

BJD vice-president Debi Prasad Mishra said that the party president has taken the decision after deliberations with senior party leaders. He has served on the post for two consecutive terms from August 11, 2007 to August 10, 2012 and was re-elected as the 14th vice president on August 11, 2012.

Naidu was BJP President in 2004 when Atal Behari Vajpayee unexpectedly lost the Lok Sabha polls. Currently, he is holding charge of Urban Affairs and Information and Broadcasting.

While NDA's Presidential nominee, Ramnath Kovind hails from north India, Venkaiah Naidu belongs to Andhra Pradesh in the south India. For the goal of selecting an experienced candidate who can run the Upper House more effectively, Naidu was probably named as the Vice-Presidential candidate by the NDA. The party which is under political exile in nearly the entire ofsouthern India has launched what can be calledits 'Mission South'in order to expand its base. However, Patnaik preferred to go with Opposition parties this time. Within some decades, he was the BJP's best-known leader from southern India, one famous for witty one-liners.

Naidu clearly has an upper edge in the election as the BJP and its allies form a majority with 410 members.

Later when he acquired a degree in law from the Andhra University, he was made the President of the ABVP union of all colleges under Andhra University.

Very few people are aware of the fact that during the Emergency, Naidu was imprisoned under Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) between 1975 and 1977.In 1974, he became the convener of the anti-corruption Jayaprakash Narayan Chhatra Sangharsh Samiti of Andhra Pradesh. Whatever Parliamentary Board decides is final.
