Tesla's Model 3 is Here - But Elon Musk Predicts Short-term "Hell"

More than half a million customers have already placed deposits.

Tesla has officially delivered the first production Model 3 units.

The Tesla Model 3's dashboard doesn't look like any other car's, and Elon Musk knows it.

Tesla unveiled the Model 3 concept first in April 2016. It's priced at $35,000 in America, which is equivalent to around £27,000 - but American cars tend to be cheaper stateside than they are in the United Kingdom, so expect the Model 3's United Kingdom price to be around £35,000. It goes from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 5.6 seconds and tops out at 130 miles per hour. The charging rate at one of Tesla's Superchargers, for this particular trim, could handle 170 miles in 30 minutes.

With its $35,000 starting price - half the cost of Tesla's previous models - and range of up to 310 miles (498 km), the Model 3 could bring hundreds of thousands of customers into the automaker's fold, taking it from a niche luxury brand to the mainstream. Next, the cars will be delivered first to Tesla owners, especially those living closer to the Fremont plant.

Tesla Model 3 is a major step for the California-based company, and will be priced around 35,000 US dollars each. Based on earlier information from the electric vehicle company, at one point over 300,000 people had signed up to get one.

FEATURES: The Model 3 has some surprises. That will cost you an extra $5,000. At $35,000 for the base model, the Model 3 is significantly cheaper than the Model S or the Model X, both of which were priced in the vicinity of $80,000 and $140,000 respectively. A battery with a longer range is available for more money. Elon Musk hopes that the company will succeed in making about 2, 50, 000 cars per year in the beginning.

- $5000 Premium Upgrades Package includes: heated seats, 12-way adjustable power front seats, steering column, and side mirrors; premium audio, tinted glass roof with UV and IR protection; auto dimming, power-folding, heated side mirrors; LED fog lamps; and center console with covered storage and docking for two smartphones.

But the Model 3 isn't the only project on Tesla's radar screen. The Model 3 will have the hardware necessary for Autopilot and you can choose to software enable it either from the time of purchase, or later for a fee. The Model 3, just by itself, could easily double or even triple electric vehicle sales in the US if Tesla can ramp up production.

Eighteen-inch wheels and tires are standard, with sport wheels and 19-inch all-season tires a $1,500 option.

Tesla's new model is the key to the company's future, and the reason why its share price has almost doubled since December. Zero-to-60 time is 5.6 seconds. This bigger battery charges somewhat faster, too.

Touching lightly on the ambitious production ramp up, Musk warned the employees present that they will be entering "production hell", and once again emphasized the American automaker's plans on how it'll manage to deliver all the Model 3s now on pre-order.
